After bursting onto the scene with star-making turns in the plays Born Yesterday and the current Venus in Fur, Nina Arianda is one of the most celebrated new dramatic actresses in town. But we couldn't help but wonder if she'd be up for doing a musical, so we asked her!
"I'm open to it," Arianda told Paul Wontorek on the newest episode of the popular weekly Broadway.com talk show Show People, premiering on February 24. "I'm not a singer, but I enjoy singing and I'd be interested in maybe doing that."
In fact, Arianda revealed that she dreamed of playing Young Cosette in Les Miserables as a kid and appeared in some musicals when her family was living in Germany during her teen years. Among her musical credits are Ain't Misbehavin', The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Zaneeta Shinn in The Music Man.
Do any videos exist of these rare performances? "I don't think so," she laughed. "No, thank God!"
If Arianda is looking to jump into a musical project now, she should get in touch with Woody Allen, who directed her in his Oscar-nominated hit Midnight in Paris. Allen is bringing his well-loved film Bullets Over Broadway to the Great White Way and Arianda is perfect for Jennifer Tilly's screen role: mob bimbo Olive Neal!
